Sarcopenia

Sarcopenia

Overview

Sarcopenia is a condition characterized by the loss of muscle mass and decline of muscle performance (such as grip strength or gait speed). It is a gradual process that can begin as early as age 30 and can accelerate in the later years of life.

Sarcopenia is caused by a combination of factors, including comorbidities, changes in hormones, decreased physical activity, and inadequate nutrition. It can lead to a variety of negative outcomes, including increased risk of falls, reduced mobility and independence, decreased quality of life, poor outcome during hospitalization and mortality.

Procedure

1.Measurement of skeletal muscle mass by DXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) or BIA (body impedance analysis)

2.Measurement of muscle performance (such as grip strength and gait speed)

3.Exclude secondary causes of sarcopenia and individualized survey for comorbidities related to weight loss

4.Dietary counseling and reenablement program suggestion
