Peritoneal dialysis

Peritoneal dialysis

Overview

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a type of treatment for patients with kidney failure. It uses the lining of your abdominal cavity, called the peritoneum, to filter your blood and remove excess waste and fluids.

Features Summary

PD is a convenient and flexible treatment option, which can be performed at home or at work, allowing patients to maintain their daily routine while receiving treatment. PD has several benefits over other types of dialysis, including fewer dietary restrictions, more flexibility in lifestyle, and the preservation of residual kidney function. PD is also associated with better cardiovascular outcomes and a lower risk of infection compared to hemodialysis.

There are different types of PD, including Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD). APD uses a machine to perform several exchanges of fluid overnight while the patient sleeps, which can reduce the time and effort required for manual exchanges. APD could also incorporate with online remote patient manage platform to provide on time monitor and treatment. These new technologies have improved the effectiveness of PD and made it more accessible for patients.
